Muddy Ochre Ceramics

About

Gretchen Miller has always loved the muted colours and forms of the natural  world. Satiny surfaces, earth textures, irregular forms, the magic of what emerges from the pit fire, the unexpected lusciousness of raku techniques.

But she's also drawn to shiny, pretty things. The reflection of light, the depth of colour and crystal in glossy ceramics brings her great joy.

In this collection you’ll see her fascination for the earthy, and the shiny, and a sustained ‘look over there, what's that!?’ approach to the world of clay.

This way of looking and learning does not lend itself to a single aesthetic, a matching range. Much of her work is one off, as she explores another pathway, another side trip into mud and ochre.

Gretchen had a long career in audio documentary making at ABC RN in Sydney, and has composed and performed her work at the Sydney Opera House. She recently completed a PhD and won Australian Podcast of the Year (2023).

She lives on the NSW Central Coast, and when not pottering about, digs up clay as she revegetates a native habitat in her garden, while raising bantam hens for fun.
