Pit fired vase

$140.00

A pit fired vase can use a variety of techniques to make a unique, unrepeatable pattern. This one was splashed with ferric oxide, epsom salts, draped in banana peel and seaweed, with a wrap of copper mesh. This is all carefully contained within a tough tinfoil saggar, before being laid into a large brick pit, layered with sawdust and covered with Australian hardwood. The fire is spectacular! A few hours later, after it has burned down, the pit is covered with tin and left for a few days. And then the magic is revealed...
The nature of the process means these pots are not water tight, but suit dried arrangements, or can just be an art object!
20cm tall x 11cm wide.
With grateful thanks to Central Coast Potters (NSW, Australia), a gorgeous collective of keen potters who collaborate together to do this work in winter every year.
